Shiva means “light“ or “fire“, Lingam “pillar” or “tower”. So therefore Shivalingam means “Pillar of Light (or Fire)”. A Shivalingam is a mighty symbol of light, surrounded by a festoon of flames, that arise from the earth to the sky and send out light and warmth to all those that come reach. The form of the Lingams symbolizes the invisible, unmanifested power of creation. Male and female energies are here united. The nearly originally oval form of the Shivalingams is the male energy and the red marks represent the female energy.
This group of three come from the collection of Boris Kegel-Konietzko, whose mother Lore collected them on one of here countless journeys to India in 1952. |
