Maternity Figure of the Chokwe

Price: 3.000 €

Even though this object surely has been influenced by the colonial masters and probably has been bought for their possession, it still has to be called a master piece of its art without any exaggeration. If this figure had served a cult – it would reach high five-digit amounts at international auctions.

Superbly crafted in the typical Chokwe style, this figure represents a female ancestor of former high rank. The little child on the one, the sceptre on her other knee – substitution symbols of a caring sovereign’s wife.

The fineness of this figure is so fascinating, that one simply cannot get enough of looking at its details. The magnificent hairstyle, the patinated features of mother and child just like the stunning fact, that all this – including the luxuriously decorated stool – having been carved out of one piece of wood, simply takes your breath away.

A carving simply to fall on one’s knees!
