The Dogon have up to 100 types of masks. They all derive from the stylistic and ritual 10 meter high mother mask Imina-na, whose form describes a snake.
The meaning of the Kanaga-Mask, which in some respects reminds one of a Lothringer cross and sometimes its design is quite delicate, can be interpreted differently. The different versions between “Birds in Flight”, Crocodile and the Shape of a Creator. The masks are solely danced by men, dragged over the ground in performance.
This old piece belongs to the collection of Boris Kegel-Konietzko since the 1950s. Its grand dimensions make it to a very decorative object with a good dash of magic.
