Welcome to the Origomundi Gallery.

A laudation to the ritual creativity of the world’s nations – that is our goal. The origin of the immense spectrum of African tribal art is found in all objects: masks, headdresses, statues and figures, fetish, dolls, architectural objects, weapons, vessels and musical instruments – they all originate from different sources. The influence of religion and magic, the belief in occult powers worshipped in ancient ceremonies or the well protected rites of the secret societies, reputations and power as objective – all this and much more are the reasons why even the basic articles of daily use are bestowed with design and expression through the technical skills.

Come with us on a fascinating and inspiring tour through distant cultural landscapes and make your own home the final destination for the object of your desire – an exciting contrast to the modern interior of your home.

Then the most important aspect of our collection is next to the decorative value, the ethnological authenticity of the individual object.

Gallery tour

Under the menu item Philosophy you will find full particulars regarding our gallery concept and the quality criteria.

We present our objects in seven categories.

Premium selection
Discover the finest objects from top-class collections, like beauties from Boris Kegel-Konietzko’s possession. The family of this charismatic ethnologist specialized in African tribal art already at the beginning of the last century

Masks
There are far more masks than the types from the former colonies which are ever so popular in Europe. Predominantly, masks were used during dances. Textiles, feathers and jewellery on the whole body formed together with the mostly wooden head section the complete mask.

Figures
For many collectors the field of figures and statues is a never ending source of enthusiasm regarding the expression and the decorational strengths of these works of art. Carved out of one piece, polished with rough leaves and afterwards patinated with plant oil or darkened or painted with wood stain – its creation was a complex and fascinating process. They always embody powerful creatures from the hereafter, such as ancestors, ghosts from the wilderness or mythical figures.

Shields & Weapons
Knives, axes or javelins, out of metal or wood they all are evidence of highly developed technical skills. Many of them have been extend far beyond their functional use and are richly decorated and emblazed. Many weapons and shields were merely used within ceremonial festivities and were sometimes part of a disguise. Others were used as payment instrument.

Vessels
Not only their different materials and designs, but also their different functions are the reason for the enormous variety. Their spectrum of usage draws a bow from the simple households’ appliances to ritual devices.

Jewellery
Degree and honour, a social position, function and the affiliation to a group were signalized through jewellery. Again other objects were used for the delivery of secret messages as evidence of the credibility of the sender.

Musical instruments
Musical instruments have been neglected up to now by collectors. Maybe the reason is that a direct connection between the ritual or secret society cannot not be exactly defined They served as accompanyment to dances and chants or were used as signals. Often it was exactly defined who owned which instrument and on which occasions they were played.
