All copied face mask in the form of a small idealized human face, carved out of thin wood with round or narrow eyes and a black surface mostly obtained via a mud-bath are counted per se as Dan-Masks.
From the northern Dan masks (due to the dry savannah they only appear there) the most frequent are the runner masks or the fire alarm masks, which is carried by the fastest runner of a village, to sound a note of caution and to call for timely help if a fire breaks out. They have big, circular eyes for better orientation.
This piece is a fine representative of the male variant of this species. It is masterly crafted and in an extremely good condition with a magnificent brightness and patina. There are clear signs of usage. |
